Melius Initiates Coverage on 19 Global Aerospace & Defense Companies

NEW YORK – October 3, 2017 – Top-ranked multi-industry analyst, Scott Davis, today announced the launch of Melius Research (Melius), an independent equity research boutique focused on the industrial sector. Melius aims to deliver differentiated research that harnesses the extensive cycle experience of the firm’s founders and leverages their ability to access and extrapolate new data sources. The launch of Melius is marked by the firm’s initiation of aerospace and defense sector coverage, which will be followed by machinery and multi-industry coverage.

Davis serves as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Melius, where he is also the lead research analyst covering the multi-industry sector. He brings more than 25 years of industrial research experience and has been the #1 ranked Multi-Industry analyst since 2010 according to the annual Institutional Investor All-America Research survey. Davis has been highly ranked since 2004 and was a top-two or -three analyst in packaging in 2001 and 2002. Prior to Melius Research, Davis spent 6 years as a Managing Director and Head of the Global Industrials Research Group at Barclays Plc and 15 years at Morgan Stanley, where he served as a Managing Director and Head of Global Industrials Research.

“As the industry continues to experience massive structural changes, and with MiFID II poised to disrupt the traditional research model in January 2018, we are excited to provide a better solution for our clients,” said Davis. “At Melius Research, we are dedicated to driving productivity, lowering costs and simplifying the investment research process. We are returning to our roots as fundamental equity analysts by increasing our ‘on-location’ bottom-up research, better leveraging data analytic tools and offering a unique approach to corporate access.”

Davis is joined by six additional founding partners, including two leading research analysts: Carter Copeland, a top-three ranked analyst in the aerospace and defense sector, and Rob Wertheimer, a top-three analyst in the global machinery sector. The institutional sales and distribution effort is led by Scott Weiss and Tim Greene, who were previously top-producing salespeople at Barclays and Lehman Brothers.

Copeland, who serves as President of Melius Research, will lead coverage of the global aerospace and defense sector and today initiates coverage of 19 companies including Boeing, Raytheon, United Technologies, Airbus Group and Lockheed Martin. In the dozen years prior to joining Melius, he was ranked in Institutional Investor’s All-America Research survey every year since he became a lead sector coverage analyst. Copeland was ranked in the top-three in the aerospace and defense sector for 2016.

“As a truly independent research shop, we have the flexibility to bring new and unique thinking and analysis to industrial stock selection, starting with aerospace and defense holdings,” said Copeland. “Our views go beyond the simple cyclical investing playbook in the aerospace and defense sectors, focusing on underappreciated attributes and opportunities that drive outperformance.”

Rob Wertheimer, who serves as Director of Research, will lead coverage of the global machinery sector. He brings more than a decade of machinery research experience to Melius, and has been recognized as a top-three analyst by Institutional Investor at both Barclays and Morgan Stanley. Wertheimer also led machinery coverage at Vertical Research and started his career covering beverage and retail across Latin America as an associate on a top-ranked team.
